Beginner's Trike Riding Tips

While many riders find trikes easier to handle than traditional motorcycles, that doesn’t mean that controlling one is always a piece of cake. It takes time and practice to learn how to properly control a trike. This list of tips from Hall of Fame Harley-Davidson® can help new riders to get a better handle on controlling a trike.
 

Starting and Shifting Gears

The proper way to start a trike is to engage the brake and then the clutch. The rider should then shift into first gear before releasing the brakes. Slowly increase the throttle and release the clutch. If you need to change gears, do so carefully and while driving in a straight line if possible. Much like changing gears in a manual transmission car, the rider should drop the throttle, engage the clutch, shift to the appropriate gear, and then let the clutch out again.
 

Turning On A Trike

One major way that trikes differ from traditional motorcycles is that trikes are steered directly using the handlebars rather than by the operator shifting their weight. Ideally, the rider should slow down before the turn but take the turn itself at a constant speed. That means not hitting the throttle again until you’ve exited the corner. Being able to turn smoothly is important for safely operating a trike, so be on the lookout for potential turns before you need to make them.
 

Stopping On A Trike

Trikes require more time to stop than traditional motorcycles since they are heavier. Give yourself plenty of time to brake so that you can avoid lockup. If you only want to use one set of brakes for whatever reason, use your trike's rear brakes.
